I have been making wood Greenland paddles for as long as I have been making carbon fiber Greenland paddles. Any of the carbon fiber paddle designs that are currently available are also available in western red cedar. I make the wood versions of my paddles from the very best clear western red cedar I can find. Believe me; the pieces I find are exceptional. Every piece of western red cedar I carve a paddle from is tight grained, quarter sawn and free of any knots.

Here is a view of a basic polychrome lamination. All WRC except for the maple strip down the middle. 

  I am in the process of putting together a new paddle design which incorporates hard maple along the edges of the paddle blade and on the tip. This  resembles very closely the traditional bone tipped western Greenland style kayak paddles which we are familiar with from antiquity. Here’s a picture of the unfinished prototype (10-29-09).
